Usually I dislike wildlife photos that don’t show the animal’s eye, and I appreciate how something about this photo grabs me despite not being able to see the bird’s head at all.
For photographers — this is another “lucky” lighting condition as the bird was perfectly in the sun while the background was shaded by a thicket of trees. Captured at Arana Gulch in Santa Cruz, CA

Photo taken at Wilder Ranch State Park. This is part of a series of several photos all taken within minutes of one another. When I showed a photographer friend later, he responded, “How long did you wait for these?” Truth be told, less than 10 minutes total. As I approached the coast, I said to the Universe, “If I don’t capture any photos today, I’ll still be grateful because this nature is beautiful. But please give me some dope photos…”

Did you notice the second owl? Owls are my spirit animal and it was a treat getting to photograph these two juvenile great horned owls at Natural Bridges State Park.
